Welcome to Sarah Jane Art!
I am a passionate creative based in Bath, UK, who has loved drawing, painting and writing for as long as I can remember. There is something incredibly special about putting pen to paper and losing yourself in creativity and art. I work predominately with pen, ink and watercolour; using line and colour to express what most captures my attention and sparks my imagination. As Henry David Thoreau said: "The world is but a canvas to our imagination"
When I'm not creating or working, I can usually be found keeping fit, running or practising yoga or reading. I love exploring our beautiful planet, visiting new places and absorbing different cultures. One of my favourite places to visit in the UK is the Lake District. It is endlessly beautiful and has the power to calm the most anxious of minds.
I love to surround myself with colour. Colours give me energy, soothe my mind, pick me up when I’m feeling low, and always make me smile. My favourite colours, if I had to choose, are the warm and cosy yellows and oranges of a sunset, and vibrant electric blues, turquoises and teals.
Despite a life-long love of art, my background, after A-levels at school, is in Geography, Town Planning and Urban Design. For one reason and another, I took the more academic route after school and spent much of my time studying cities and the built environment (hence my interest in architecture and urbanism).
I took up watercolour painting in 2016 as a way to switch off from work. I am self-taught through trial, error and passionate determination. Overtime I have grown in confidence and skill, although I still consider myself to have a long way to go.
I tend to draw and paint what I love the most - wildlife, birds, pets, and architecture. Wildlife is everything. Imagine a world without all it's wild and natural beauty! I particularly love the colour, song and character of birds, which are forever a joy to watch, paint or listen to. Waking up to bird song is one of life's pleasures.
Alongside painting, I have been developing my skills in calligraphy. Calligraphy has been an interest of mine ever since I first learned about Egyptian hieroglyphs at school! Copperplate is my first love and is a skill I am developing constantly. I also adore Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, and iconic Art Deco typography, both of which have influenced my artistic outlook and love of inks. I fell in love with calligraphy the first time I picked up a pen holder and honestly can't imagine life without it - it is my ultimate pleasure and meditation <3
