About

Welcome to Sarah Jane Art!

I am a Bath based artist and calligrapher with a passion for capturing the beauty of the world around us. Art in the widest sense has been a love and obsession of mine for as long as I can remember. Whether it's the act of creating art of my own, or admiring that of others, the visual image is something I cannot imagine my life without. There is something incredibly special about putting pen to paper and losing yourself in the creative process.

"The world is but a canvas to our imagination"

Henry David Thoreau

My work is inspired predominately by colour and pattern in the natural world, specifically botanical subjects - flowers, insects and birds. I also take great pleasure in studying the built environment, capturing the unique details and essence of architecture and street scenes. I took up calligraphy in 2019. Whilst calligraphy represents a separate art form, its history is interwoven with the emergence of the depiction of botanical subjects. My work is rooted in an appreciation for traditional approaches to documenting the beauty of the world around us, be it through a paintbrush or nib.

When I'm not painting, drawing or practising calligraphy, I work as an Urban Designer, shaping our built environment. Outside of this, I can usually be found keeping fit, practicing yoga, jogging, and walking. I love to read and learn, and to explore our beautiful planet, visiting new places and absorbing different cultures. One of my favourite places to visit in the UK is the Lake District. It is endlessly beautiful and has the power to calm the most anxious of minds.

I love to surround myself with colour. Colours give me energy, soothe my mind, pick me up when I’m feeling low, and always make me smile. My favourite colours, if I had to choose, are the warm and cosy yellows, oranges and pinks of a sunset, and vibrant electric blues, turquoises and teals.

I took up watercolour painting in 2016 and calligraphy in 2019, both as a way to switch off from a busy day job and to satisfy a creative itch. I am self-taught through trial, error and passionate determination.  Overtime I have grown in confidence and skill, although I still consider myself to have a long way to go on my artist journey.
